4 Foods and Beverages for Healthy Gums

← Back to index

Your Dietary Choices Can Affect Tooth Health

Do your gums bleed when you floss? You should know this is one of the earliest signs of gingivitis (gum inflammation caused by oral bacteria). If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to inflammation of the bone tissue holding your teeth in place, which is associated with problems like arthritis, Alzheimer’s, obesity, heart disease, and cancer … not to mention painful and receding gums!

The good news is that gingivitis can be prevented and even reversed. Daily flossing and brushing, as well as routine trips to the dentist, are essential (no surprise there). But did you know eating certain foods can boost gum health, too?

Most people know that staying away from sugary foods and drinks is good for their oral health. Here are four foods and beverages you want to consume more of for healthier gums:

1. Fruits and Veggies

Fruits and veggies contain fiber. Fiber stimulates your mouth to produce saliva which helps you digest your food. But saliva does a lot more than that – it also keeps your mouth moist, neutralizes harmful acids, fights bacteria, and protects against gum disease. Saliva even contains important minerals like calcium and phosphorus that strengthen your teeth.

Fruits and veggies are also loaded with vitamins and minerals that your cells and tissues – including your gums – use to stay healthy.

2. Sugarless Gum

If you can’t brush right after a meal, chew sugarless gum. This stimulates saliva production and helps remove food particles and bacteria from your mouth.

3. Green and Black Tea

Green and black teas contain natural molecules called polyphenols – including catechins and flavonoids – that fight oral bacteria and reduce gum inflammation. The antioxidant compounds in these teas may also help prevent bone loss.

4. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contains antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies show that swishing coconut oil in your mouth for 10 minutes per day – a traditional technique known as oil-pulling – can reduce the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth. While not a substitute for mouthwash, coconut oil-pulling can be a great natural addition to your oral care routine.
