As bodies age, they produce less collagen – the protein that supports skin, ligaments, and other bodily systems. Collagen deficiency is why faces develop recessed areas under the eyes and cheeks, and around the nose. Dermal fillers can reverse the signs of aging by adding mass to facial hollows.
Molly Weiandt, DMD, is licensed to administer facial fillers. At MW Dentistry & Esthetics, we offer facial esthetics, cosmetic dentistry, and general dentistry services, so you can feel confident about your appearance and your smile.
How Dermal Fillers Work
Dermal fillers are either naturally occurring synthetic substances in gel form. The gel is injected under the skin to fill-out recessed areas of the face, and the gel stimulates the production of elastin, the protein that gives skin elasticity.
The Procedure
Dermal gel may be injected at one or more points on the face, depending on the patient’s desired results. This procedure may cause mild discomfort, and while side effects are rare, they include redness, swelling, and bruising. Certain types of fillers may look bumpy under the skin, but only temporarily. The effects of dermal fillers wear off in six months to two years.
Safe Dermal Filler Injections
Only trained, licensed medical professionals should administer dermal filler injections, in a sterile setting. A medical or dental office follows needle-sterilization procedures to protect patients from infection. Unlicensed providers can injure patients with poor injection techniques or the use of unapproved fillers.
Dr. Weiandt is a member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, a professional organization that offers training and certification for healthcare professionals. At MW Dentistry & Esthetics, we provide safe and sterile dermal filler injections.
