How Dental Implants Work
A dental implant consists of three parts:
- A titanium post inserted into the jawbone
- An artificial tooth/crown, custom-colored to match other teeth
- An abutment that secures the crown to the post
After the titanium post is inserted, the jawbone will slowly grow and fuse with the post – a process that may take several months. Once the post is firmly embedded in the jaw, the abutment is attached, and the gum tissue surrounding it must heal before the crown can be attached (in some cases, the abutment and post may be installed at the same time).
The Jawbone and Dental Implants
A dental implant must be secured in a healthy, fully grown jaw, so it’s not an option for patients who have extensive jawbone loss, or who have a medical condition that affects bone growth.
Jawbone loss occurs gradually following the loss of a tooth. Replacing a lost tooth with a dental implant stimulates bone growth and stops the progression of bone loss.
Dental Implants vs. Dentures
The major differences between dental implants and dentures are:
- Cost – Dental implants are usually costlier than traditional dentures.
- Longevity – Dental implants last for 25 years or longer when cared for properly, whereas dentures may need to be replaced every five to 10 years.
- Comfort – Once the dental implant process is complete and gum tissue has fully recovered, most patients experience no discomfort, whereas some people who wear dentures experience irritated gums.
- Maintenance – Caring for a dental implant is the same as caring for a natural tooth; dentures must be removed for cleaning, and they may need to be professionally adjusted periodically.
In some cases, a combination of dental implants and dentures can provide more stability than a traditional denture alone.
