A life well-lived is bound to come with a few wrinkles here and there. As you get older, your skin naturally starts to lose some of its smoothness. Plus, years of smiling, laughing, frowning, and other facial expressions can lead to crow’s feet, wrinkles, and other fine lines. If you’d love to minimize the appearance of those fine lines, we encourage you to visit our Anderson dental and esthetics team at MW Dentistry & Esthetics. We’ll help you feel more confident in the skin you’re in.
How Botox Works
Botox® is a brand name of a medication containing a form of a bacteria known as onobotulinumtoxinA. This bacteria can cause food poisoning-related paralysis, but in microscopic doses (like the amount found in Botox), it’s not harmful. Botox temporarily immobilizes the muscles in the face that normally create expression lines, thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines and facial wrinkles. The effects last anywhere from three to six months.
Another popular brand name for this booming cosmetic treatment is Dysport®. Dysport is similar to Botox in function, safety, and overall effectiveness, but it contains a different bacteria (abobotulinumtoxinA). At MW Dentistry & Esthetics, we offer both Botox and Dysport injections and will help you decide which type of treatment is the best fit for you.
What to Expect During a Botox Procedure
A Botox or Dysport injection procedure takes just minutes in the chair. The risk of side effects is very low, and most of our patients experience no side effects at all. In some cases, Botox and Dysport injections can lead to temporary issues like a droopy eyelid, bruising, or a headache, but these symptoms generally resolve within a day.
When deciding whether Botox or Dysport may be right for you, make sure you consider whether the provider of such injections has appropriate credentials. Dr. Molly has extensive clinical training and experience in facial esthetic and cosmetic procedures and is licensed to administer Botox and Dysport injections.
Limitations of Botox
Industry standards tell us that Botox isn’t the most effective treatment for wrinkles caused by smoking, loss of skin elasticity, sun damage, and simple gravity. Instead, we find that dermal fillers are far more effective for these types of facial lines. Dermal fillers use a specialized gel material to plump-up hollows and creases on the face, to provide a smoother and more youthful appearance for up to two years.
