At MW Dentistry & Esthetics, we understand that anxiety keeps many people from getting the dental care they need. That’s why we offer safe sedation dentistry.
If you think sedation dentistry might be the right option for you, please contact us today.
Helping Patients Move Forward
For people who have anxiety about seeing a dentist, sedation may be the first step toward overcoming that fear. Often, once patients have been to our office a few times and become comfortable with our team, they find they no longer need to be sedated to undergo routine dental procedures.
Easing Jaw Discomfort
People who have temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) or small mouths may experience discomfort or muscle spasms in their jaw muscles when undergoing dental procedures. Sedation relaxes muscles and can help in reducing post-treatment discomfort.
The Sedation Dentistry Procedure
We use two methods of sedation in our office: nitrous oxide (otherwise known as “laughing gas”) and a prescription oral sedative. Some patients find that nitrous oxide alone calms their nerves, but an oral sedative may be necessary for patients with severe anxiety.
Before prescribing an oral sedative, we ask patients questions about their medical history, to make sure they have no health conditions that might affect their reaction to the medication. We then prescribe the medication, which the patient takes about one hour before their appointment.
While sedated, patients are still awake, but relaxed. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, but we generally recommend patients arrange for someone to drive them home. Patients taking an oral sedative will need a ride to and from their appointment – the sedative causes moderate drowsiness that wears off after a few hours.
If you need dental care, we encourage you to contact us today. We’ll help you find a way to get the care you deserve.
